Allison Boyer, 18, Chico California
What it started as a 7-year-old’s desire to do something about the palm oil crisis plaguing orangutan habitats, it has turned into a fully scalable nonprofit called Purses for Primates that has raised over $27,000, to protect orangutans and their shrinking habitat. Allison is also a Barron Prize winner, and collects gently-used handbags from across the U.S., resells them at fundraising events, and donates 100 % of the proceeds to Orangutan Outreach, a New York City-based conservation group.
She is a
founding member of the group’s extensive children’s program, Forest School 101,
and serves as the program’s current ambassador. “Orangutans have such an
intelligent mind. They teach each other and grow together,” she tells Teen
Vogue. “I have and always will feel personally responsible to try my best to rally
as many people as I can to help save these creatures.” She attributes much of
her success, though, to her BFF, Natalie Katsikas, who stuck by her side over
the past 11 years while other friends faded away or called her efforts “dorky.”

A day in
Allison Boyer’s life
Allison starts her days very early in the
morning. She gets up at 5:30 am, and takes a shower to wake up. Normally, she
makes breakfast. Sometimes, her husband makes it. They usually have mixed eggs,
orange juice, and a jam or tuna sandwich. Other times, they have fruit salad,
too. After breakfast, frequently, Allison checks her agenda before starting
work. Her husband, George is a lawyer. He works in an important company. They share
housework because they must work every day. They don’t have lunch at home. They
eat something fast at work and have a good coffee in the middle of the day or
the afternoon.
Allison normally gets home at 6 pm. George
often gets home earlier. After dinner, they usually watch a good movie or
listen to music. Sometimes, they like reading a good book, too.
Allison usually takes out the trash and puts
it in some containers. George normally cooks dinner every night. They usually
go to bed at 10:30 pm, but on weekends they stay awake until 11. They wake up
later on Sundays and go out after breakfast to visit family, friends or make a
short trip to escape from the city.
Allison
and George normally practice sports on Saturdays and Sundays. Allison often
plays tennis or soccer. George usually plays baseball or golf. They like
playing with friends, too.
Allison thinks that recycling is important to
preserve nature. George always complains about respiratory problems because of
the pollution.
Allison is working in a new project these days.
She is working on preventing air pollution in her city. There is lots of
pollution around and so many cars, too. George is helping to assess the project
to assure success. Allison says that cars number must be reduced or modified to
preserve the air. George says that mining produces dangerous gases and particles
that affect the air. They think air pollution affects our respiratory system.
